Dear Motability and Glyn Hopkin Management,
I am writing to formally raise a complaint regarding the appalling and degrading treatment I received during my recent interaction at Glyn Hopkin MG, specifically involving Joel Murdock and his manager.
As a 44-year-old Black woman and a dedicated mother to a son with autism and scoliosis, I expected a professional, respectful, and supportive experience while accessing the Motability scheme. Instead, I was made to feel like the lowest of the low—as though I had just walked out of the jungle. I cannot put into words the depth of humiliation and emotional pain I felt. I cried in front of everyone at the dealership due to the manner in which I was treated.
Joel Murdock previously informed me that my car was ready to collect. Upon arrival, I was presented with a showroom vehicle that had visible scratches, stains, and faults, despite the fact that I had paid money as part of the lease agreement. When I raised my concerns, I was not met with understanding or professionalism. Instead, I was spoken to in a patronising and dismissive tone by both Joel and his manager, as though I were receiving charity rather than entering a paid lease agreement.
When I returned to challenge the condition of the vehicle and the way I was treated, Joel told me, in no uncertain terms, that I should "remember I do not own the car and should not make any demands." This response was demeaning, especially in the context of the emotional and financial investment I’ve made to ensure my son has safe and appropriate transport.
Their behaviour has left me feeling dehumanised, discriminated against, and unworthy. I truly believe that if I were white, my experience would have been entirely different. This is not just about poor service—it is about the discriminatory way I was made to feel, simply because of the colour of my skin and my circumstances.
It pains me deeply that my son, who already faces daily challenges, had to witness his mother being treated with such contempt. If it were not for his needs, I would have returned the vehicle immediately.
I strongly urge you to review this matter with the seriousness it deserves. No customer particularly one accessing a scheme meant to support individuals with disabilities should ever be made to feel this way. Glyn Hopkin MG needs urgent review of its customer service standards, staff conduct, and diversity training.
At this point, I would not recommend Glyn Hopkin to anyone. I expect a formal apology and clear actions on how this situation will be addressed to prevent any similar experiences from happening to others in future.
